Day 10: Bibbiena - Sansepolcro (57km - 3:45)
Sunday 2 May
Fortunately our b&b was on the route that we would have been taking out of Bibbiena, and a steady but not ridiculously steep climb along the SS208 took us over another mountain and a chilly descent to a mid-morning cappuccino and chocolate stop just after Pieve San Stefano.
A winding road alongside a river and lake took us to Sansepolcro where we found our chosen hotel very easily, and this time they did have a room.
After dumping our stuff we took a gentle stroll through the old town, which included some of the best gelati we had the whole trip.
A surprise (well, not a complete surprise - I knew Leonardo Racing was there) was the Cannondale bike shop which was closed, being a Sunday.
We had supper at the excellent restaurant at the hotel. The head waiter was quite a character doing acrobatics with the tiramisu. We did the full 3-course thing washed down with some very pleasant house wine. Dinner was interrupted for a little while when wild hooting and cheering erupted in the streets outside. AC Milan had won the Italian football championship and clearly there were a lot of happy people in town. Red and black flags were being waved everywhere.
A nice way to end the day after the miserable end to yesterday.
