Day 11: Sansepolcro - Gubbio (80km - 3:49)

Monday 3 May

We slept a little late this morning and breakfast was served in the hotel's kitchen - biscuits and cappuccino. First stop was the Cannondale bike shop. All they sold was Cannondale - lots of 'em, in all shapes and sizes. Pity my credit card wasn't a bit more loaded :(. We did buy some very discounted cycling clothing though, and we were on our way again. Raining again unfortunately, although only lightly.

Pretty flat riding took us about 40kms alongside the Tiber, to Umbertide where we bought some lunch which we ate in a quiet park. The sun had come out and it was turning into a warm day. The road to Gubbio was fairly busy with lots of trucks, but once again they gave us lots of room.

The campsite in Gubbio was unfortunately some way out of the town, but the ground was flat, and they had good facilities (ie. a laundry!). It was empty too, and we were one of three couples in the entire campsite.

Nicole wasn't feeling so great, so I headed into town alone to do some shopping for supper and tomorrow's breakfast. We made tuna and ravioli, with fresh strawberries for dessert. It was actually quite nice to not have pizza for a change! Unfortunately though we didn't get to explore the old city, which was the reason we'd come this way in the first place.

We also spent some time planning an amended route, as we were a bit worried about the distances that we'd set ourselves in the last few days, considering that there was very little flat road around, and that the weather was average to crap. Not typical weather for this time of year, we were assured by all of the locals, but crap nonetheless.
