Bratislava Streets

Last year I was very fortunate to travel to Bratislava, Slovakia, for the annual Mesiac Fotografie (month of photography). I visited many fantastic exhibitions, including Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, Inge Morath and others. The range of photographic styles on show was incredible. You can view the festival program here to get an idea of the diversity.

Of course when I wasn’t looking at photographs, I was wondering around and taking them. The weather was mostly bleak, but that didn’t stop me from walking literally the whole day, every day. This is a selection of street shots from my trip.

Day 95

Well I’ve made it past a quarter of my 365 challenge. Also just clocked up 10,000 shots taken with my D90, which I’ve had for just over 3 months.

Here a nun crosses in front of the granite memorial to a synagogue that was destroyed to build the Nový Most bridge (I posted a pic of the bridge a few days ago). In fact the entire Jewish quarter was demolished to make way for the bridge. The granite wall was only erected after the fall of communism.

Day 94

Seems the weather people got it wrong, and it rained the whole day today. So rather than shooting, today was a gallery day.

November is “Bratislava Month of Photography”, with a lot of exhibitions around town. Amongst others, today I saw Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, Inge Morath, Juraj Bartoš and Jens Olaf Lasthein. Also the World Press Photo 09 was on show.

Some really inspirational stuff, especially the Ansel Adams which is even better when seen large.

Day 93

An early posting for today. I headed out South of the city centre this morning, across the Nový Most bridge. The bridge is most famous for its UFO tower that sits above. There’s a restaurant and nightclub up there, both pricey, from what I’ve heard.

Day 92

I did a lot of walking this morning. And a lot of shooting. Luckily the weather held out, and although the light was poor, at least there was no rain.

This shot was taken in the Baptist cemetary north of the Bratislava castle. There is no inscription on the tombstone.
